So, in almost all cases, the tapered plug will fit the opening, however, because of the variations in bottle opening sizes, the plug may not grab to make a completely airtight seal. 

So, as all bottles are NOT created equal, it is possible to push too hard and force the plug completely into the bottle. Likewise, it may not grab the inside of the bottle to hold the stopper in place.

So, first, with an empty bottle you can simply tip the bottle to remove the stainless-steel stopper.  Second, with an empty bottle, safety glasses, gloves, and placing a towel over the bottle you could carefully break the bottle to retrieve the plug.  This is just a suggestion.  You would be doing this at your own risk.
